Walk me through your career paths. Alex: I fell in love with fashion when I met Michael during our freshman year of college. I fine-tuned my style through our trips to Europe and while studying marketing at Parsons The New School. After I graduated, I worked at various fashion houses including Ralph Lauren, Theory, and Emily & Ashley. Michael: My grandmother, Lola, was the one who sparked my interest in fashion. Early in my career, I also studied at Parsons The New School and started to love the experience of styling women. I started out working for fashion companies including Diane Von Furstenberg, Oscar de la Renta and Zac Posen. I am currently the Vice President of Sales at KAUFMANFRANCO.
How have you applied the knowledge gained from your career paths to Stylists to a T? Alex: As a former buyer, I understand what trends are worth investing in season after season. As a woman, I am always on the lookout for silhouettes that are going to highlight or accentuate a woman’s figure. I love diversifying my look; putting together outfits that make me feel polished is what I strive for everyday. We want our women to feel like they can come to us to access that kind of fashion sense. Michael: Over the past 9+ years in the industry, I’ve had the pleasure of styling celebrities. I’ve worked closely with professional stylists, which has helped me develop my intuitive ability to look at a woman’s body and know exactly how to dress her. There’s nothing better than witnessing a moment where a woman feels gorgeous in her skin.
Did you grow up wanting to have your own company? Yes. Both of our families had their own companies and we knew this was something we wanted to do too.
How did you learn to start and grow a company? Through working in both corporate and small business environments.
How did the idea for Stylists to a T come about, and how has it evolved over time? Our friends and family were always coming to us for styling advice. It was evolving even in Michael’s world at KAUFMANFRANCO, so we decided to bring it to a larger platform. We started off as a blog and sharing personal advice. Over the past few months it has developed into a styling destination telling followers what to wear, how to wear it, and where to buy it.
How did you choose the name and design the logo? We were with our family and were throwing different names out there. Stylists to a T just hit us because we always like dressing to a T, no matter the occasion. We thought since we are already acting as stylists, it was the perfect name. Also, T is the first letter of our last name, so it just fit!
For our logo design, we wanted something modern and contemporary that would be long lasting. We drew inspiration from different fashion books and magazines.
Walk me through the process of designing your website. We wanted something user friendly, but sophisticated. It was really important that the text was attractive and clear to our readers. We wanted to make sure that the design was a reflection of who we are as a couple. We spent a lot of time doing market research on the best possible way to lay everything out for our readers. We have learned that you can constantly change things as your business evolves. It has been fun to see what works and what hasn’t.
How often do you travel, and what do you do while there? We love to travel whether to visit our families in Florida or to just getaway. We probably travel on average every month. Our favorite places to visit are Aspen and Capri. We love shopping, culture, food and the arts. We also enjoy heading to the beach or going skiing. We are always on the go wherever we are.
What advice would you give to someone interested in starting their own company? It's a marathon not a sprint. Listen to all pieces of advice and feedback whether you think it is right or wrong. It all helps!
Where is the company today, and where do you see it in the future? We have been in business since May 2016 and have grown more than we expected, which we are very excited about. We have some exciting things up our sleeves that we are working on which we cannot share quite yet.
